Best East Coast Beaches in Sri Lanka for September
Planning a beach holiday in Sri Lanka in September? Head East.
September is a good month to consider Sri Lanka’s East coast if your priority is a beach holiday. While the southwest coast is still affected by the southwest monsoon, the East coast beaches are among the better choices at this time of year.
But September is also a transition month. The first half of September is generally the safer bet for classic east-coast beach weather, while conditions can become more variable later in the month.
Also, all the east coast beaches are not equally good for every type of beach holiday. Some are better for swimming, some for surfing, and some simply offer a better beach holiday.
Here are our best picks for you to consider.
1. Nilaveli Beach – Best Overall
If you want one beach that does almost everything well, choose Nilaveli.
Located North of Trincomalee, Nilaveli has a long sandy beach and generally calmer conditions during the east-coast beach season. It is also the main beach area for visiting Pigeon Island National Park, which is known for coral reefs and snorkelling.
Best for:
- Swimming
- Relaxing
- Snorkelling
- Families
Our verdict: ⭐ The best all-round beach on Sri Lanka’s east coast.

2. Pasikuda Beach – Best for Calm, Shallow Water
Pasikuda is famous for its very shallow coastline. You can walk a long way into the water before it becomes deep, making it one of the better choices if swimming in calm, shallow water is your priority.
The beach is more resort-oriented than Nilaveli, but that can be an advantage if you want an easy beach holiday with your accommodation close to the sea.
Best for:
- Swimming
- Families
Our verdict: ⭐ Choose Pasikuda if swimming comfortably matters more to you than surfing or nightlife.
3. Uppuveli – Best for Convenience
Just south of Nilaveli, Uppuveli is another excellent option around Trincomalee.
The beach is more developed than Nilaveli, with a larger selection of guesthouses, restaurants and places to stay close to the sand. That makes it a convenient base if you want a beach holiday without feeling too isolated.
The surrounding Trincomalee area also gives you more things to do when you want a break from the beach, including Koneswaram Temple and the historic harbour.
Best for:
- Restaurants
- Accommodation
- Easy access to Trincomalee
Our verdict: ⭐ The best choice if you want a beach holiday without being too far from town.
4. Kalkudah – Best for a Quieter Stay
Kalkudah sits next to Pasikuda and offers another long stretch of sandy coastline. It is a good choice if you like the Pasikuda area but want something quieter.
You can also easily visit Pasikuda from Kalkudah, so you don’t really have to choose between the two.
Best for:
- Peace
- Less developed beach atmosphere
Our verdict: ⭐ A good option for travellers who want fewer distractions and more beach time.
5. Arugam Bay – Best for Surfing
Arugam Bay is the obvious choice for surfers. So, Arugam Bay is not our first choice for a traditional swimming-and-relaxing beach holiday.
It is one of Sri Lanka’s most famous surfing destinations, with its main surf season running through the middle of the year and continuing into September.
By September, the main season is winding down, but surfing can still be good, while the crowds are usually thinner than during the July and August peak. The town also has plenty of cafés, restaurants, surf schools and accommodation.
Best for:
- Surfing
- Lively traveller atmosphere
Our verdict: ⭐ The best beach on this list if surfing is your priority.

Is September a Good Month for the East Coast?
Yes, but don’t expect guaranteed sunshine every day.
September is towards the end of the east coast’s main beach season. Conditions can still be very good, but the weather becomes increasingly transitional as the month progresses. If the beach is the main purpose of your trip, early September is the safer choice than late September.
And regardless of the month, check local sea conditions before swimming. Weather and waves can change quickly, and conditions are not identical at every beach.
Our Recommendation
If you are visiting Sri Lanka in September and don’t know which beach to choose, keep it simple:
- Choose Nilaveli for the best overall beach experience.
- Choose Pasikuda for shallow, relaxed swimming.
- Choose Arugam Bay if you surf.
And if you have enough time, Trincomalee + Nilaveli and Pasikuda + Kalkudah can be combined into a longer east-coast beach trip.
Bottom line: If you’re visiting Sri Lanka in September and want a beach holiday, don’t automatically head south. The east coast is where you should be looking.
